Traduction :

Built in 1855

This chapel built in 1855 was damaged by the flood of June18th,2013.

Its floor was then redone.

In 2023, the municipality carried out its last restauration.

What is its history ?

Miss Jeanne Sanson, in a handwritten notebook handled to the town hall around 1990, evokes the chapel of San Sebastian and the cholera epidemic in the middle of the 19th century :

In 1885, a cholera epidemic ravaged the region. The inhabitants of Fos invoked San Sebastian.

To invoke protection on the village, the parish priest at that time, Abbé Arnaudère appealed to the generous spirit of his parishioners and the chapel was built. A little girl from the chapel district, Marguerite Candau , laid the 1st stone of the altar.

In FOS, between August 23 and November 26, there were 82 proven cases of cholera and 55 deaths.

Why is this chapel dedicated to San Sebastian ?

It is the saint implored all over the world to protect the populations from the numerous epidemics of plague of the Middle Ages.

The inhabitants of Fos also call him Saint Fabian ( or « Saint Fabien » in French)

The only explanation is that San Sebastian and Saint Fabien were martyrs of the 3rd century both celebrated on the same day , January 20th.

This chapel is also called BATAN chapel

It is simply the name of the neighbourhood.

On a plot of land on the other side of the street, ran a fuller mill ( called « batan » in local langage) because of the noise it caused. Indeed, a hammer was operated by the waters of a watering channel now disappeared, which struck the wool or the leather to modify their stucture.
